Lawn – Sports Gun

New Orleans duo Lawn has emerged from a brief hiatus with “Sports Gun,” a potent new single that marks their signing to Exploding in Sound Records. After their 2022 EP “Bigger Sprout,” band member Rui De Magalhaes relocated to Chicago and released a solo album as Rui Gabriel, but now the pair has reunited with renewed creative energy.

De Magalhaes explains that “Sports Gun” originated from a short story he wrote before the pandemic. The story centres on a coach or parental figure who pushes their subject to extreme limits without genuine concern.

“It is supposed to be more about the lengths some people go to accomplish something, conflating happiness with ambition, and overall being inept at being content,” De Magalhaes explains. This thematic focus on obsessive achievement culture gives the song a sharp critical edge beneath its infectious groove.
